5 Things to Do in South Florida This Summer

From scenic highways and beautiful geological features to exotic wildlife and award-winning ice cream, the Sunshine State is ripe with fun and exciting experiences ready to be had. With the summer season in full swing, now is the best time to explore everything South Florida and beyond has to offer. So if you’re craving new adventures, look no further. Here are five unique things to do in South Florida this summer.

1. Take a drive on Florida State Road A1A

Florida’s Highway A1A is one of the most scenic road trip routes in the nation. Stretching from the southern tip of Georgia all the way to Key West, the 329-mile-long highway boasts breathtaking ocean views and plenty of worthy pitstops. Along the way you’ll encounter historic sites, delicious eats, elegant accommodations and, of course, some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Simply hop on the A1A and you’re guaranteed to find something fun.

2. See the Anastasia limestone at Blowing Rocks Preserve

Blowing Rocks Preserve
Blowing Rocks Preserve is arguably one of Florida’s most interesting geological features. Named for its rocky Anastasia limestone shoreline, the preserve is the largest of its kind on the Atlantic coast of the United States. While the dark, jagged rock formations resemble the remains of a dried lava flow, they are actually sedimentary rock. If you happen to visit the preserve during one of Florida’s common summer showers, you may bear witness to the seas breaking against the rocks — which can force plumes of saltwater up to 50 feet high!

In addition to admiring the gorgeous shoreline and rock formations, guests can enjoy a variety of activities like swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, hiking and more. With 73 acres of land, there’s truly something for everyone here.

3. Get exotic at Lion Country Safari

Located in Palm Beach County, Lion Country Safari is unlike any other zoo experience. One of the first ever drive-through safari parks, this “cageless zoo” introduced a new concept to animal lovers when it opened 60 years ago. Lion Country Safari is Florida’s only drive-through safari adventure and allows guests to get up close and personal with a variety of exotic animals. In addition to the drive-through safari, there is a walk-through amusement park with over 900 animals as well as animal displays and encounters, animal feeding experiences, rides, a water sprayground, plus all of the food and shopping you could want.

4. Cool down with an ice cream cone

As if we needed a reason to indulge, July just happens to be National Ice Cream Month. And what better way to keep your cool in the Florida heat than with a delicious ice cream cone? Luckily, South Florida is home to a handful of award-winning and nationally-recognized ice cream shops. But while finding a good cone is no problem, one shop takes the cake (or should we say cone?). Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlour & Restaurant in Dania Beach offers more than 60 flavors of ice cream, each of which is made by hand in store. The old-fashioned ice cream shop opened its doors in 1956 and boasts one of the best selections of ice cream in the area. Stop in and enjoy supersized scoops, float, shakes, parfaits, waffles, and a selection of food.

Looking to take a multi-day adventure in South Florida this summer? A road trip to Key West is a must. The Overseas Highway offers endless entertainment and things to do during the 110 mile stretch to the southernmost point of the United States. Enjoy the breathtaking ocean views as you traverse the islands by a series of bridges, stopping along the way to enjoy some of the world’s best seafood, drinks and, of course, key lime pie. End your day bar hopping along Duval Street while admiring Victorian mansions before ending your day watching a stunning sunset.
