Why is the thermostat screen blinking?
The Thermostat Batteries are Low and Need to be Replaced
If your thermostat screen is blinking, it may simply be a sign that the batteries are low and need to be replaced. When your thermostat’s batteries eventually die, you will be presented with a blank display screen — and unable to cool or heat your home. Fortunately, replacing your thermostat’s batteries is a relatively simple task that can be accomplished by referring to your owner’s manual. However, types of batteries differ from thermostat to thermostat, so be sure to check which batteries your thermostat requires beforehand.

What does a red-blinking thermostat mean?
The Thermostat Has Detected a Problem with the Outside Unit
If you are seeing your thermostat blink red, it can be quite alarming. When this is happening, it is usually due to an issue with your outdoor unit — and the thermostat has “locked it out” and stopped running. Go outside to inspect your outdoor unit for any obvious problems and call your local HVAC technician to investigate further.
Why is my thermostat blinking “Cool On”?
There is a Time Delay Before Starting the Compressor
If you’ve noticed your thermostat is flashing “Cool On,” but it’s not currently blowing any cool air, you may be wondering what this means. Typically when this happens, your system is in a time delay before the compressor starts running again — which means the temperature in your home is currently matching what’s programmed on the thermostat — and therefore, does not need to push out cool air into your home. To test this, lower the temperature on your thermostat by a couple of degrees. After a few seconds, the message should stop blinking and remain static as your unit kicks on to reach the newly programmed temperature. However, if your AC is still not cooling — or is cycling on and off frequently — this could indicate that your AC system is short cycling.
