Loose Toilet Handle

Plumbing problems can be inconvenient and frustrating  — especially when they’re unexpected. A loose toilet handle is one of those issues that seems to happen at the worst of times. But, with how often it’s used  — it’s only a matter of time until it happens.

A loose toilet handle prevents your toilet from being able to flush  — which can be embarrassing. And, if left untreated, can decrease the efficiency of your plumbing  — resulting in costly water bills. Fortunately, it’s a minor plumbing issue that can usually be fixed without a service call in just a few easy steps.

How to Fix a Loose Toilet Handle in 4 Steps

Fixing a loose toilet handle is easy and fast. But, before you get to work, make sure you have an adjustable wrench on hand.

Step 1. Shut off the water to the toilet.

Locate the supply pipe and shut-off valve behind the toilet. In a clockwise motion, turn the valve to shut off the water.

Step 2. Remove the toilet tank lid and flush.

You can easily remove the toilet tank lid by lifting up. Once the lid is removed, flush the toilet by lifting up the rubber flap. It is easier to fix the toilet handle once water is emptied out of the tank.

Step 3. Tighten the toilet lever nut.

Using the adjustable wrench, turn the toilet lever nut inside the tank counterclockwise to tighten it. Cautiously turn the nut until you feel resistance and then stop. Turning the lever nut past resistance can crack the porcelain.

Step 4. Put the toilet lid back on and turn on the water.

Once the toilet lid is restored and the water is back on, the toilet handle should now work as expected.

Ensure your toilet handle is fixed by pushing down on the handle to flush the toilet. If you are unable to push the handle down all the way, the toilet lever nut is too tight. Following the same steps as before, loosen the toilet lever nut in a clockwise motion. If your toilet handle is still loose after adjusting the toilet nut lever  — it may be time to replace it.
