Signs Your Water Heater Needs to be Replaced

While you may not think about it, you use your water heater a lot — for your showers, dishwasher, cooking, and more. But, unfortunately, all appliances eventually need to be replaced — including your beloved water heater. But, how do you know when it needs to be replaced? What signs do you need to look for? We’ve compiled a list of the most common signs your water heater requires replacement.

5 Signs Your Water Heater Needs to be Replaced

1. It’s Outdated

Unfortunately, appliances don’t last forever. If your heater is more than ten years old, it’s time for a replacement. Water heaters that are past their prime are prone to exploding, which can do serious damage to your home and puts your safety at risk. Are you unsure of how old your water heater is? The best way to determine the age of your water heater is to look at the water heater’s label, which is located by the manufacturer’s label.

2. Hot Water Runs Out Too Fast

Running out of hot water too fast is uncomfortable, especially when you’re taking a shower. This problem can indicate your water heater is failing due to old age or that it’s improperly sized for your home. If your water heater is new, learn more about what causes your hot water to run out too fast.

3. Rust

Do you see rust on your water heater tank? This could mean that your water heater is rusting on the inside as well — which could be the first sign of a future leak. If your hot water is rust-colored, the inside of your unit is rusting and needs to be replaced.

4. Leaks

If your water heater is leaking, this is usually the first sign it’s on it’s way out and needs to be replaced. While you may be able to repair the leaks temporarily — this will not permanently fix the problem.

5. Improperly Maintained

Like any other large appliance, your water heater needs regular maintenance to function efficiently. Unfortunately, water heater maintenance is often neglected — which can cause your unit to malfunction and prematurely fail. If your water has not been properly maintained, it may be time for a replacement.
