How to Update the Software for Trane Comfortlink II Thermostats

While upgrading your thermostat’s software may seem intimidating, fear not — this is something you can do yourself in just a few minutes. Read on to learn how.

Trane XL950 Comfortlink II Software Update

Note: Before you can upgrade your software, you will need a standard SD memory card with 80 MB of free memory, and a computer or laptop with an SD card reader or a USB to SD card adaptor. Once you’ve got those, follow the steps below:

Trane XL950 Firmware Update

Step 1. Insert a blank SD card in your computer’s SD card reader or SD port.
Step 2. Right-click on the link provided via the Trane website. (*note: Trane removed the download link from their website.)
Step 3. Follow the instructions for your web browser.
Step 4. Remove the SD card from your computer.
Step 5. Insert the SD card into your ComfortLink™ II control.
Step 6. Press Menu > Settings > Network > Software Upgrades > Next > then select “Check for upgrades on SD Card” to start the install process. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the software upgrade.

Automatic and Local Updates

The XL850 and XL824 models conveniently upgrade automatically whenever a new software is released.

Local upgrades require a standard USB flash drive, a USB adaptor and a computer or laptop with a USB port. Once you’ve got those, follow these easy steps:

Step 1. Insert a blank SD card into your computer’s SD card reader or SD port.
Step 2. Right-click on the link provided via the Trane website. (*note: Trane removed the download link from their website.)
Step 3. Remove the flash drive from your computer.
Step 4. Insert the USB adapter into the micro USB port on the side of the control. The control must remain powered during the upgrade process.
Step 5. Connect the flash drive to the USB side of the cable.
Step 6. Press Menu > Settings > SW Upgrades. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the software upgrade.
