When it comes to maintaining your air conditioning system, one of the most important things you can do is change your air conditioning filters on a regular basis. But just how often do you really need to change it?

5 Factors That Influence How Often You Should Change Your Air Filter

While we recommend replacing your air filter once per month, there are other factors that can influence how often you should change the air filter in your AC system.

Check out some of the biggest factors that influence the best time to replace your old air filter with a new one.

1. Do you have pets in your home?

We all love our furry friends, but pets can bring in excess dander, dirt and the like, which directly affects how often you should change your air filter. If you have a pet that sheds a decent amount of fur or tends to track in lots of dirt from the outdoors, check your air filter every few weeks to ensure it’s not dirty.

2. What kind of air filter do you have?

Not all air filters are created equal. While some air filters are designed to last for months at a time, others made from lower-quality materials will need to be replaced more often. If you’re not sure which air filter is the right choice for your air conditioning system, look to the MERV rating for guidance. MERV, or minimum efficiency reporting value, is the rating system used to determine how well an air filter traps particles.

What MERV Rating Should I Use?

While MERV ratings go up to 20, the highest rated filters are best for environments that need to be extremely sterile, such as hospitals, and aren’t necessarily the best option for your home. Not sure what MERV rating you should look for? This MERV rating chart can help.

3. Do you or your loved ones suffer from allergies?

If you or your loved ones suffer from allergies, one of the best things you can do to lessen symptoms is being diligent about changing the air filter in your air conditioning system. When you don’t change your air filter regularly, dander, dirt, dust and other allergy-inducing particles will be more prevalent in your home, worsening allergy symptoms as a result. If anyone in your home has severe allergies, consider replacing your air filter more often.

4. How often do you use your air conditioning system?

Homeowners who live in cooler climates don’t typically use their air conditioning systems as frequently as those in warmer states, which means they can often get away with changing their air filter less often. But homeowners who use their air conditioning systems for the better part of the year (ahem, Floridians), should be extra diligent about replacing their air filters regularly.

5. Do you frequently burn candles in your home?

Do you love burning scented candles? If so, be sure to change your air filter on a regular basis. Things like smoke from candles (and even cooking), can cause your air filter to get dirty faster than usual.
