AC Running Constantly But Not Cooling

As a Florida homeowner, one of the most frustrating things to deal with is an air conditioning system that runs constantly but doesn’t seem to cool. This is problematic for a few reasons: Not only is one of your biggest home investments not doing what it is designed to do, but it is wasting energy (and your hard-earned money) in the process.

3 Reasons Why Your AC Is Constantly Running But Not Cooling

If this sounds familiar, it may be due to one of these three common culprits.

1. The Air Filter Is Clogged

As the air filter works to collect debris, it will become bogged down and reduce airflow. This is why we recommend changing your filters regularly. If you live by yourself, once every six months should be enough. If you have a large family or several pets, do it more often than that.

Set up a reminder on your cell phone so that you don’t forget to do it. You can get new ones at stores like The Home Depot, Lowes, or Amazon.

2. Your Air Conditioning System Is Low on Refrigerant

Refrigerant is also known as coolant. Typically, you don’t need to “top off” the refrigerant in your AC unless there’s already an existing issue (for example, leaking or a broken part). This should be done by an HVAC professional since there is such a thing as refrigerant poisoning if you breathe in too much of it or accidentally spill it on your skin.

3. Your Air Conditioning System Is Too Big

An AC that is too large can cool your home too quickly, meaning your system will constantly be cycling on and off. This is why this is a problem: An AC works by absorbing the vapor from the air in your home, and cycling it to cool it. If your system is too big, the AC will do this much faster than it needs to. This, in turn, will cause your unit to work harder than it has to, driving up your utility bill and probably even causing mold in your AC ducts.
